Doesn’t it drive you crazy when your dog just won’t stop barking, or always jumps up on people at the worst time or makes a giant puddle on the living room sofa? You love that dog, but its behavior makes you want to pull your hair out.
Life with your pooch does not have to be agonizing. It all starts with how we train our dog from the beginning. So many of us are guilty of one or more of the "five bad ways to train your dog!"
Lack of Patience: We pressure ourselves to train our dog to behave quickly. Things just don’t work that way with a dog. We have to have fun with the process and know that mistakes will happen and the making progress in improving our pets behavior is the goal.
Lack of Consistency: If you want to train a bad dog then do not spend time every day in training the dog. A well behaved dog is the direct result of spending a consistent 15 minutes a day every day working with our dog through a ritual of obedience training sessions that become an expected part of the daily routine for both your dog and you.
Punishment: Another great way to train up a bad dog is to go ballistic when the dog misbehaves. Yelling and screaming and certainly physically striking the dog or swatting its nose will almost certainly cause the dog to recoil from you and not respond to you in your training times.
Lack of Positive Reinforcement: If you give your dog commands without the positive reinforcement of treats to eat or petting and scratching that is a bad way to train your dog. Always have treats available for when your dog does something well and be liberal in your verbal praise of your dog when he or she does well.
Whose the Boss? To train a dog to be bad let the dog be the boss of you. It is so important to treat your dog lovingly but firmly. You cannot let doggie move on unaware when it misbehaves, to do so is to let the dog train you adjust to its behavior. This you do not want. Don’t be a wimp with your dog, use a firm authoritative tone of voice and make eye contact with your dog when correction is needed.
Perhaps worst way we can train our dogs is by not taking the relationship with them serious enough to spend the time energy and resources we need to develop and engaged warm fun experience with our dog. This is the deadly sin of ignorance which will indeed lead to a disinterested dog at best or a badly misbehaving dog at worst.
In so many ways training our dog is comparable to how we treat our human family and friends. If we ignore, and mistreat our dog we are simply training our pet to that we don’t care so they will respond with bad behavior.
There are so many great ways to train your dog, that are available to you that really you have no excuse for using bad ways to train your dog.
